Researched plan, not a trip we took
The Celta train Porto–Vigo (two a day each way), the old town and O Castro hill on foot, and a 20-minute ferry across the Ría de Vigo.
Researched plan, not a trip we took. Built from official sources consulted on 2026-10-31. Times, timetables and opening hours change: check on the day.
By: Está no Ir desk research. Days: 3 (2 nights). Origin: Porto (Campanhã). Destination: Vigo (Casco Vello, O Castro) and Cangas or the Cíes Islands. Transport: train, coach (rail replacement), boat, on foot.
For: Travellers who want another country without a plane.
Best months: 15 May–15 September and Holy Week for the Cíes Islands on your own (prior Xunta authorisation needed). The rest of the year Cíes only with an authorised guided group; the Vigo–Cangas ferry runs all year.
Celta train Porto Campanhã ⇄ Vigo (CP with Renfe), seat reservation compulsory. Until 7 April 2027 the Spanish section Valença ⇄ Vigo-Guixar is a replacement coach (no wheelchairs, no unpacked bikes, no pets on the coach). Check on the day.
Two nights in central Vigo, near the old town and the maritime station.
Cíes as a last-minute idea in summer: without the prior Xunta authorisation you can't buy the boat ticket. Plan it or choose Cangas.
Celta from Campanhã (coach between Valença and Vigo-Guixar until April 2027). Afternoon in Casco Vello.
Ferry from the Estación Marítima de Vigo to Cangas (Mar de Ons, about 20 minutes; winter timetable: Monday–Friday every 20 minutes until 10:00, then every 30 minutes, last boat from Vigo 22:30; Saturdays, Sundays and holidays hourly, from Vigo at half past — check on the day). In season, the Cíes instead, with authorisation. Late afternoon, walk up Monte O Castro: a steep climb from Plaza de España or Rúa Camelias (opening hours of the walled area not confirmed — check before going up late).
Morning walk, then the Celta back to Porto.
Researched plan, not a trip we took. Every place and time comes from the linked official sources, consulted on 2026-10-31. Check on the day.
noCar: truenoFlight: truewithKids: "unknown"reducedMobility: falsewithDog: falsemaxWalkKm: "unknown"Values: true = the plan as written works with that constraint; false = it does not; "unknown" = not verified. Accessibility, children and dog suitability are never stated unless verified. reducedMobility and withDog are false only because the rail-replacement coach (until 7 Apr 2027) takes no wheelchairs and no pets, per CP.
