By: Está no Ir desk research. Days: 2 (1 night). Origin: Porto (São Bento or Campanhã). Destination: Braga (Bom Jesus do Monte) and Guimarães (Paço dos Duques, castle). Transport: train, bus, on foot.

For: People based in Porto who want two historic towns without driving.

Best months: All year. Note the Bom Jesus funicular was stopped for maintenance in autumn 2026, with a minibus shuttle instead.

Getting there and around (check on the day)

CP urban trains Porto São Bento ⇄ Braga (timetable valid since 26 July 2026) and Porto São Bento ⇄ Guimarães (valid since 14 December 2025), each about 1 hour to 1 h 15, frequent all day. There is no train between Braga and Guimarães; the line 101 bus between them runs on weekdays only, so on weekends go back through Porto. In Braga, TUB city bus line 2 ends at the lower station of the Bom Jesus funicular. Check on the day.

One night in Porto (simplest), or in Braga if you start there.

Three places worth it

Bom Jesus do Monte, Braga: the baroque stairway and basilica (basilica 08:00–18:00 in winter). In October 2026 the funicular was stopped for maintenance and a minibus shuttle ran every 30 minutes between the Pórtico and the basilica: check whether the funicular is back.
Paço dos Duques de Bragança, Guimarães: every day 10:00–18:00, last entry 17:30 (the castle keep is closed to the public).

What to cut

Braga and Guimarães on the same day, and counting on the Braga–Guimarães bus at the weekend. One town per day.

Day by day

Day 1 — Braga

Train from São Bento to Braga. TUB bus 2 to the foot of the Bom Jesus, then the funicular, the shuttle or the stairs on foot. Afternoon in the centre, train back to Porto.

Day 2 — Guimarães

Train from São Bento to Guimarães. Walk up to the Paço dos Duques and the castle, then down through the old town. Train back to Porto.
