By: Está no Ir desk research. Days: 2 (1 night). Origin: Lisbon or Porto (Alfa Pendular / Intercidades on the Linha do Norte). Destination: Coimbra: University (Biblioteca Joanina), Botanical Garden, Baixa. Transport: train, metrobus, on foot.

For: First-time visitors, students' parents, anyone who wants the old university without a tour bus.

Best months: All year. Our reading: avoid the Queima das Fitas and Latada student weeks if you want the University open, because it closes on those days.

Getting there and around (check on the day)

Long-distance CP trains on the Linha do Norte stop at Coimbra-B, now the city's only railway station: the old Coimbra-A (Estação Nova) closed on 12 January 2025. Since 10 September 2026 the Metrobus (electric buses on a dedicated lane) links Coimbra-B with the centre and Praça da República, about every 5 minutes at peak times. Check CP and Metro Mondego on the day.

Where to sleep

One night in the Baixa or near Praça da República, both on the Metrobus.

Three places worth it

Biblioteca Joanina: entry at the time printed on the ticket (50 people every 20 minutes; daily 09:00–13:00 and 14:00–17:00, last entries 12:40 and 16:40). Arrive 5 minutes early: if you miss the slot you lose the Joanina. No photos on the main floor.
Paço das Escolas and Capela de São Miguel, on the same ticket, which is valid for two days.
Jardim Botânico (winter 09:00–17:30 from 1 Oct to 31 Mar; summer 09:00–20:00).

What to cut

Buying the University ticket on the spot at midday on a busy day: book the Joanina slot online (up to 20 minutes before). And assuming trains still reach the old Coimbra-A station: they don't.

Day by day

Day 1 — arrive and the Alta

Train to Coimbra-B, Metrobus to the centre. Afternoon Joanina slot and the Paço das Escolas; walk down through the old Alta.

Day 2 — the garden and home

Morning in the Jardim Botânico, then the Baixa. Metrobus back to Coimbra-B for the train.
