Researched plan, not a trip we took

3-day trip to the Algarve without a car: train, boat and on foot?

The Linha do Algarve is now fully electric, with direct trains Lagos ⇄ Vila Real de Santo António. Lagos cliffs on foot, a boat to the Ilha de Tavira, and old Faro before the flight.

Researched plan, not a trip we took. Built from official sources consulted on 2026-10-31. Times, timetables and opening hours change: check on the day.

By: Está no Ir desk research. Days: 3 (2 nights). Origin: Faro (airport or station; Lisbon/Porto by train or plane). Destination: Lagos (Ponta da Piedade), Tavira (Ilha de Tavira), Faro. Transport: flight, bus, train, boat, on foot.

For: Couples and solo travellers who fly in and don't want to drive.

Best months: Our reading: April–June and September–October. Note the Tavira island boat runs a reduced winter timetable (from 25 Oct 2026, last boats mid-afternoon).

Getting there and around (check on the day)

Fly to Faro (book far ahead or on a promotion for the cheapest fares). Próximo bus 16 links the airport and Faro's bus terminal (about 20 min). CP regional trains on the Linha do Algarve link Lagos, Faro and Vila Real de Santo António (timetable valid since 19 July 2026; about hourly Faro–VRSA and every two hours Faro–Lagos). Check on the day.

Where to sleep

Night 1 in Lagos, night 2 in Tavira or Faro: all three are on the railway.

Three places worth it

What to cut

Lagos and Tavira on the same day: they are at opposite ends of the line. Give each its own day.

Day by day

Day 1 — Lagos and the cliffs

Arrive at Faro, train west to Lagos. Afternoon walk out to Ponta da Piedade on the boardwalks; back to Lagos before dark.

Day 2 — Tavira and the island

Morning train east to Tavira (direct trains now exist; check on the day). Get to the Quatro Águas pier and take the boat to the Ilha de Tavira; mind the last boat back in the winter timetable.

Day 3 — Faro and home

Train to Faro. A walk in the old town before the bus 16 to the airport.

Researched plan, not a trip we took. Every place and time comes from the linked official sources, consulted on 2026-10-31. Check on the day.
