Porto → Como, Bernina, Milan

She left Porto. She slept in Colico. On the second day, the train from Tirano to St. Moritz. On the third, Milan on foot and the flight home.

Getting there

Morning flight Porto–Bergamo, a small bag, no priority. Coach to Milan Centrale. Train to Colico. Next day: train to Tirano and the Bernina to St. Moritz, out and back in a day. Home by the same path.

Where she slept

A room in Colico, two nights. The bed sits by the lake; the Duomo and St. Moritz are visits.

Three places worth it

• The boat between Varenna and Bellagio. The lake itself, not the postcard shore.
• The Bernina. A stop at Alp Grüm. The other stations if the train allows.
• Milan on foot: the castle, one gallery, a neighbourhood. A place to eat off the axis.

What she would cut

The Duomo queue at peak hour. Branded shops and coffee in the centre. “While we are here” at one more monument when the flight leaves at 20:00.

Day by day

Day 1 — the lake

Porto in the morning. Bergamo before noon. Coach to Milan, train to Colico, drop the bag. Afternoon: train to Varenna, boat to Bellagio, the streets, back to the room.

Day 2 — the Bernina

Early to Tirano. A return ticket on the Bernina, to step on and off when the train stops. Alp Grüm counts. St. Moritz is the end of the line, not the whole programme. Night back in Colico.

Day 3 — Milan and the flight

Early train to Milan. Bag in station left-luggage. Castle, a piece of city, the gallery if it fits. Leave Milan in time for the coach to Bergamo. Evening flight to Porto.
